Last Updated: June 21, 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to betterday.

betterday is a voice-first reflection app for iPhone that helps you reflect on your day, track your mood, notice patterns, and receive AI-powered outputs such as Daily Mirror and weekly reports.

This privacy policy explains:

  • What data we collect
  • How we use it
  • With whom we share it
  • How AI-related processing works
  • What choices and rights you have

When we say “we”, “our”, or “betterday”, we mean the betterday app and its individual developer/operator.

By using betterday, you agree to this privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

2. High-level summary (TL;DR)

  • We collect the data needed to run betterday, including sign-in data, your reflections, moods, routines, and generated insights.
  • We may let you try parts of the app using an anonymous Firebase account before you create a full account.
  • Your main app data is stored in Firebase / Google Cloud and linked to an internal account ID.
  • betterday uses AI services through Firebase AI / Google AI for features such as transcription, activity extraction, Daily Mirror, weekly reports, and related analysis features.
  • While you record, the app may also use Apple Speech recognition to detect routine-related words in real time. The app prefers on-device processing when available, but some Apple speech processing may use Apple’s service depending on device and language support.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not use your data for targeted advertising or cross-app advertising tracking.
  • Subscription handling is provided through Apple’s App Store and RevenueCat. We do not collect or store your full payment card details.
  • You can delete saved entries where supported and can delete your account and associated data from inside the app.

3. What data we collect

3.1 Account and authentication data

When you sign in, or use guest tryout features, we may collect:

  • A Firebase user ID (UID)
  • Sign-in provider information, such as Apple or Google as your login provider
  • Your email address, if your sign-in provider shares it with Firebase Authentication
  • Basic profile information made available by the provider, such as a display name
  • An anonymous account identifier if you use a tryout flow before full sign-in
  • A nickname you choose to use in the app

We use this information mainly to authenticate you, connect your data to your account, and keep your app experience consistent across sessions.

We do not store your password in plain text. Authentication is handled by Apple, Google, Firebase Authentication, or equivalent provider-managed flows.

3.2 Reflection, journal, and insight data

To provide the core experience of betterday, we collect and store data such as:

  • Voice recordings created during your reflection flow, stored temporarily on your device during processing
  • Transcript text derived from your reflection
  • Your selected mood for the day
  • Activities, themes, categories, or routine outcomes extracted from your reflection
  • Intentions you create for Weekly Compass
  • AI-generated aliases or related terms used to better recognize intention mentions
  • Locally stored recognition terms, such as names, projects, or places you add to improve recognition
  • Activity detail preferences that affect how detailed generated activity descriptions should be
  • Daily Mirror text generated from a saved reflection
  • Weekly, trial weekly, custom/ad-hoc reports, and other generated insight outputs available in the app
  • Attribution or selection data when you indicate what most influenced your day
  • Timestamps, local date, and time zone data used to align entries correctly
  • Historical entries and related metadata so you can review your past reflections

Your reflection content may naturally include personal information that you choose to mention, such as names, places, or events.

If you use paid features or see the paywall, we may collect or receive:

  • Subscription status and entitlement status
  • Purchase, restore, and renewal-related state
  • Paywall display, dismissal, and purchase outcome data
  • RevenueCat customer and offering metadata needed to manage access to paid features
  • Basic monetization metadata associated with your account, such as paywall timing and entitlement sync status

Subscriptions are purchased through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles billing and payment processing. betterday does not collect or store your full payment card details.

3.4 Technical, analytics, and security data

To keep betterday working reliably and securely, we may collect limited technical and usage data such as:

  • App version and platform
  • Feature interaction events, such as sign-in, recording flow steps, report generation, Daily Mirror interactions, and paywall events
  • Notification permission and preference events
  • Basic error and failure diagnostics
  • Coarse network state information such as wifi, cellular, or offline
  • Security and abuse-prevention signals used through Firebase and related app integrity tooling

We use this information for product analytics, reliability, debugging, abuse prevention, and service improvement, not for advertising.

We use this information only to respond to you, troubleshoot issues, and improve the app.

We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell your data.

5. How AI and speech processing works

betterday uses AI and speech technologies in two main ways.

A. Firebase AI / Google AI

betterday uses AI services through Firebase AI / Google AI for features such as:

  • Full transcription of recorded reflections
  • Activity and routine analysis
  • Daily Mirror generation
  • Weekly report generation and related insight features
  • Routine alias generation to improve routine recognition

To provide these features, we may send the relevant reflection content or routine titles to those services. We design prompts and requests to avoid unnecessarily including direct account identifiers such as your email address.

However, your reflection content itself may contain personal information if you choose to say it out loud or type it. In addition, service providers may receive standard technical metadata needed to operate their systems under their own terms and privacy policies.

B. Apple Speech recognition during recording

While you are speaking, betterday may use Apple Speech recognition to detect routine-related words in real time and improve the in-app recording experience.

The app prefers on-device speech recognition when available. In some cases, depending on device or language support, Apple’s speech service may be used instead.

This live speech recognition is separate from the later AI processing used for full transcript and insight generation.

What we recommend

If you are concerned about privacy, avoid including highly sensitive information in your entries, such as:

  • Full addresses
  • Government ID numbers
  • Payment information
  • Other people’s sensitive personal data

6. Where and how we store data

6.1 On your device

Some data is stored locally on your device, including for example:

  • Temporary audio files created during recording and processing
  • Cached or restored copies of recent entry data
  • Guest tryout draft data
  • Your local nickname
  • Notification preferences and app settings
  • Words to recognize that you save locally on your device
  • Activity detail preference and related local settings
  • Legacy on-device history data, where applicable

Local device storage is protected by the security controls of your device, such as passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID.

6.2 In Firebase / Google Cloud

  • Weekly Compass intentions and related aliases
  • Daily Mirror text
  • Weekly, trial weekly, custom/ad-hoc reports, and stored insight periods
  • Related metadata used to support the app
  • Certain monetization metadata related to paywalls and entitlement syncing

Access to account-linked data is intended to be restricted based on your authenticated account.

6.3 With subscription and platform providers

Some data is also processed by third-party platform providers that help deliver the app, including:

  • Apple, for App Store subscriptions, Sign in with Apple, and certain speech/OS-level services
  • RevenueCat, for subscription entitlement and customer-management flows

  • Your account remains active, and
  • The data is needed to provide the app’s features

You may also:

  • Delete individual saved entries where supported in the app
  • Delete your entire account and associated data from within the app

After deletion, some data may remain temporarily in backups, logs, or provider recovery systems for a limited period, as is standard with cloud infrastructure.

betterday is a native iOS app and does not use browser cookies inside the app.

We do not use your data for cross-app or cross-website advertising tracking.

We do not use third-party advertising SDKs in the app, and we do not use App Tracking Transparency-based advertising tracking.
